From Faraway To Familiar : Distance & Togetherness

Sometimes, it feels like no matter how much we hope everything will be alright until we reunite, reality has other plans. People often say that those who move abroad avoid sad news from back home, fearing it will overwhelm them. But no matter how hard we try to block it out, it can’t be avoided.

We got a distressing call from home, and suddenly our minds were consumed with worry. The weight of being 12000 kms away, knowing we couldn’t just book the next flight out to India, became a heavy burden. We stayed constantly attached to our phones, hoping and praying that everything would be fine. It felt helpless, being unable to offer the physical presence and support our loved ones needed in the moment.

“The pain we feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow. For every challenge encountered, there is an opportunity for growth”, they say. And also, “Even a bad day lasts for 24 hours”. Clinging to these words, we took a walk after dinner, bundled up against the cold – a rare thing for us. The frigid air and the movement brought a calm to our minds, like fresh breaths of clarity. Slowly, the heaviness lifted, and everything started to feel a bit more manageable.

Yet, the regret and guilt lay heavy on our hearts. We weren’t there to help when they needed us the most, despite being there for us time and again. This distance, this 12000 kilometer separation, made us feel helpless. Our heart beat for them, yearned to be close again, but circumstances held us apart, even missing the most important family events. It makes our heart ache, realizing the cost of being so far away.

Family is everything, yet there are moments when distance feels like a bittersweet necessity. That rainy New Year’s Eve, as the world thrummed with celebrations, we carved out our own intimate sanctuary to welcome 2025. In each other’s embrace, we discovered a profound solace, determined not to let anxiety and heartache dim the light of our cherished moments. This delicate dance of distance and togetherness, of pain intertwined with strength, continues to mold our journey, compelling us to dream of the day when we can reunite with open arms and hearts overflowing with love.
