Calendars are like a thoughtful friend, reminding us to cherish both significant moments and small joys. Occasionally, someone whimsically declares a Tuesday “National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day”, nudging us to embrace spontaneity. Who could have imagined a day would arrive proclaiming, “Hey, I’m fabulous too!”, inviting us to celebrate life’s simple pleasures?

Life is like a beautiful quilt of random patches, each one shouting, “Hey, celebrate me!” It’s waiting for someone with a heart to dive into the joy fest. Whether it’s sun breaking through clouds, a kid’s laughter, or a meal turning into a food fight, these quirky gems transform our lives into a wild symphony of giggles. Embracing these moments shows that true happiness sprouts from the simplest shenanigans.

Yesterday, while the world celebrated International Women’s Day, we quietly acknowledged my husband’s star birthday. In our house, star birthdays are fleeting—here one moment, gone the next! We often recognize it as just another day, sharing a half-hearted “Happy Birthday!” over coffee. Decorations? Just dusty relics. Cakes? Only if available at the store! It was business as usual—a simple stroll through life, with the birthday tucked away like a forgotten sock in the dryer!

But let’s be honest, children can make adult rulebooks seem like boring bedtime stories! They zoom through life with enough energy to power a small city, driven by insatiable curiosity and a gift for chaos. While grown-ups tiptoe like they’re in a minefield, kids gleefully jump into every messy adventure, pushing boundaries and creating mischief at every turn. Who needs a manual on adulting when you have a toddler with a crayon and a desire to “decorate” the living room?

The moment my niece realized it was her uncle’s birthday, a light bulb went off—“This day is about to get a major upgrade!” She strutted up to him, beaming like a sunflower, her brain whirring, knowing a mere ‘happy birthday’ wouldn’t cut it. It was as if she had made a pact with destiny that this day wouldn’t be ordinary. No planning, just fierce determination that her uncle needed a party. With a niece like her, how could anyone resist?

soon after she called me to open the attic door : if not for this one little gesture

Soon after, she called me to open the attic door, likely forgetting it’s a black hole for random stuff. Inside, I found a mountain of decorations meant for Navaratri or gatherings—essentially times when we hide our messy lives. She dove into the pile like a kid in a candy store, yanking out everything without checking. To her, these were magical artifacts capable of transforming our home into a festive rager.

Slowly but surely, she transformed the room into a festive wonderland with odds and ends lying around. She tiptoed like a ninja on a mission, hanging ornaments and squinting at them as if she could will them into perfection. The room was evolving, not from a design plan, but from the chaotic energy of someone preparing for a surprise party with questionable supplies!

Then came the cake—or rather, the absence of it. With no cake available, she grabbed two buns, added fruit jam, and pressed them together like a creative snack. Next to her creation, she wrote “Happy Star Birthday Uncle” on a piece of paper and stuck it to the cupboard door, making sure he would notice it first—because nothing says “celebration” like a jam-filled bun!

she hurried back to the kitchen making rose milk like a mad scientist : no calendar traditions attached here

She hurried back to the kitchen, making rose milk like a mad scientist with floral drinks, using cold milk and a bit of rose essence—because who doesn’t want a drink that smells like a garden? Each movement showed her excitement to make it perfect—because if you can’t enjoy some chaos while planning a party, are you even doing it right?

Among the decorations she found, there was a big cheer pom-pom—the kind girls wave at cricket matches, making IPL games look like a confetti explosion. She stuck it on the wall and called it a piñata. Was it really one? Definitely not! But in her mind, it was a work of art. With her messy mix of random items, the room turned into a fun carnival of quirks and laughter.

Once she thought everything was ready—now a party planning expert—she gathered everyone into that room like herding cats. The excitement was palpable, and we snuck my husband in. When he saw the decorations, the tiny jam bun cake, and all the eager faces waiting for his reaction, his smile was huge!

celebration began slicing the jam bun cake, a sugary masterpiece : if not for this one little gesture

The celebration began with the slicing of the jam bun cake, a sugary masterpiece. Next, the makeshift piñata met its end at the hands of a toy cricket bat, filling the room with laughter. She summoned Alexa for the birthday song, twirling around like a dervish as the catchy tune played, enjoying her homemade fiesta!

Nothing about the celebration screamed “grand” like a royal wedding. The cake? Just a high-rise of buns slathered in jam. The decorations looked like they were borrowed from a clearance sale. And the piñata was more of a suspiciously empty cardboard box. But somehow, the room was bursting with that special joy that comes from embracing wonderfully beautiful moments.

Because in the end, what really filled that space wasn’t the fancy decorations or the wobbly cake; it was the determination of a little girl who thought her uncle deserved a grand celebration, even if it meant piecing it together from what she could scavenge. The effort wasn’t a blockbuster hit with a plan full of holes, but bless her heart, the intention made the day a laugh-fest to remember!
