A Birthday Apart : Forty & Far Away

Miles away from those I hold dear, I found myself at the vast expense of Canadian soil, yearning for the physical presence of those who could only reach me through heartfelt video messages. These messages, while deeply touching and drenching my heart in their sincerity, could not fully bridge the gap of distance.

My birthday is on September 4. This year, it was on Wednesday. The day was quiet with no cake, or grand celebrations, just a regular weekday passing by. My husband and I made a mandatory and solitary outing to a temple, where I offered thanks to almighty God for the chance to reach this significant milestone, appreciating the gift of life and the journey thus far. Yet, the despite the gratitude, a sense of loneliness lingered, as I navigated this momentous day feeling the absence of those I wished were here.

Significance of Turning Forty : A Birthday Apart

Reflecting on the significance of turning 40, I was reminded that such milestones are not just about the number of years but about the moments and memories shared with those who matter the most. My husband’s presence, while comforting, could not entirely fill the void left by the absence of family and friends. As people asked about my plans for the day, I found myself explaining that there are no plans and no celebrations, blaming it on the weekday instead of everything else. Deep down, however, I yearned for the celebrations and togetherness that these milestones often bring.

Despite the solitude, there was a quiet beauty in the simplicity of the day. The visit to the temple, with its peaceful ambience and spiritual solace, provided a moment of introspection. Standing before the deity, I whispered a prayer of thanks for the life I had lived so far, for the lessons learned, and for the love and support that, though physically distant, felt close in spirit.

It is often said that finding peace and happiness in small things, like simple celebrations and everyday good moments, is a great practice. This birthday, devoid of the usual fanfare, taught me to appreciate the subtle joys and deeper connections that enrich our lives. “This moment will not come again in my lifetime”. I thought realizing the uniqueness of each milestone. “Only we are lucky to be born again and spend another 40 years”.

As I return to my routine, I carry with me a renewed sense of appreciation for the connections that truly matter. This birthday, unlike any other, will forever remain etched in my memory – a day of reflection, gratitude and a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment, every relationship, and every milestone, no matter where life takes us.
