A Golu That Looks Effortless While A Golu That Takes The Army : When The Golu Has A Whole Production Crew

I have a weakness https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navaratri for things that begin simply but unexpectedly grow more complex. At some point, you notice that the original idea has brought along many others, and no one recalls who invited them. So, welcome to “A Golu That Looks Effortless While A Golu That Takes An Army: When Golu Has An Entire Production Crew.”

I like things that have a little more going on beneath their ordinary appearance. Not because they need to be complicated, but because the interesting part is often hiding somewhere nobody thought to look. You usually find it when you stop looking for it.

When Golu Has An Entire Production Crew : A Golu That Looks Effortless While A Golu That Takes An Army

A finished Golu has a funny way of making everyone forget what the room looked like before it got there. Once the dolls are standing, the cloth is behaving itself, the lamps are on and everything looks settled, the whole thing appears remarkably peaceful. That peacefulness is slightly misleading.

For us, the Golu kicks off with a bunch of boxes that have been just sitting around, totally ignored for almost a year. Then, out of nowhere, they suddenly become super important. We’ve got to pull out the steps, put together the wooden planks, drape the cloth, and start bringing the dolls back to life for their annual show!

Some dolls are easy. You know exactly which box they are in, what they look like and where they belong. Others come with a little detective work. An accessory has gone somewhere. A piece of clothing needs fixing. Something that was carefully kept aside last year has developed the ability to become invisible this year.

Our Golu Park Has Also Developed Its Own Permanent Residents : When The Golu Has A Entire Production Crew

Our Golu park has also developed its own permanent residents. My wedding set always takes one end, and the music concert dolls take the other. They have their established territories now. The wedding has its corner, the musicians have their stage, and the rest of the park has to make peace with both.

I actually like seeing those two ends together. One side has a wedding happening every Navaratri, with all its auspiciousness and celebration. The other has musicians who have apparently been performing the same concert for years without taking a single break. They are completely different scenes, yet they have become part of the same little park.

My Husband And I Have Our Own Way Of Getting Our Golu Set Up : A Golu That Looks Effortless While A Golu That Takes An Army

My husband and I have our own way of getting all this done too. Some boxes are practically mine because I know what is inside them. Some are more his territory. There are things one of us can find immediately while the other would have to open half the collection before getting anywhere. Nobody formally divided the departments. We somehow acquired them.

And then there is the part where the Golu develops opinions. A doll looks fine until the next one arrives. What once seemed balanced appears different from a distance. One small change prompts another, and soon we are viewing the whole setup from various angles as if we are reviewing a set.

The higher steps make the whole exercise even more interesting. Someone is up there trying to place a doll. Someone else is standing below deciding whether it actually looks right from where people will see it. There is climbing, stepping down, looking again and occasionally discovering that the original position was not as bad as we had convinced ourselves it was.

All This Happens While The House Continues Doing What Houses Do : When The Golu Has A Entire Production Crew

All this happens while the house continues doing what houses do. The kitchen is still running. Food still needs to be made. Other work is still waiting. The Golu gets its own little area of attention, but the rest of the day refuses to disappear just because Navaratri preparation has started.

There is always that stage when the whole thing looks considerably less impressive than it will later. The steps are half ready, the dolls are waiting around, things are still being found and the final picture is nowhere to be seen. It is probably the only time when the Golu looks like it has absolutely no idea what it is going to become.

Then, somehow, it comes together. My wedding set settles into its usual end of the park. The musicians take their side. The smaller scenes fill the spaces between them. A few final details find their places, the lamps come on and suddenly the room looks as though everything had been planned that way from the beginning.

That Is The Great Trick Of The Finished Golu While Nobody Sees The Back Work : A Golu That Looks Effortless While A Golu That Takes An Army

That is the great trick of the finished Golu. Nobody sees the searching, the climbing, the discussions, the misplaced accessories or the things that changed position five times before finally staying put. They see dolls standing peacefully on steps. Then Navaratri ends and we get to do the entire thing backwards.

The wedding gently retreats from its special corner. The musicians gracefully step away from their stage. The dolls find their way back into their boxes, while the little accessories return to their cozy homes, and the joyous steps fade into memory. The park, which had beautifully claimed a part of the house, quietly tucks itself away, leaving behind whispers of cherished moments.

By the end, there’s hardly any evidence it was ever there. Until next Navaratri, when the same boxes come out, the same familiar characters return and our production crew remembers what to do. The Golu never looks like an army was involved; only those who assembled it know how many hands and decisions it takes to make the final picture seem effortless.
