The Travel: A Blissful Railway Journey

The train journey booked through www.irctc.co.in starts from MGR Chennai Central (Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Chennai Central) and passes through several fascinating places in Tamil Nadu. This popular Chennai to Erode train route includes the following major stops.
Traveling from Chennai to Erode is quite the trip! You’ll pass through cool spots like Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, and Salem before reaching Erode. Arakkonam and Katpadi handle suburban traffic, Jolarpettai connects many trains, Salem is busy with industry, and Erode is for textiles.
In addition to these key stations, there are several intermediate stops along the route. While almost all trains halt at the major junctions, only select trains stop at the smaller stations in between. This way, passengers can either travel quickly between major destinations or choose trains that stop at intermediate stations, depending on their travel plans and needs.
Catering in Trains: A Bliss in Railway Travel
Since many long-distance trains start their journey early in the morning, it is often difficult to prepare both breakfast and lunch at home before leaving. As a result, many passengers travelling on early morning trains prefer to buy their meals either at the station food court or from the catering services available on board the train.
When booking train tickets, passengers usually get to pick meal options ahead of time, and munching on some onboard snacks is a super convenient and often favorite pick. On the flip side, night trains are a hit with folks looking to catch some Z’s and roll into their destination early the next morning, which saves them both time and the cash for a hotel room.
On morning trains like the Shatabdi Express, passengers are usually provided with water bottles, newspapers, and breakfast shortly after departure. However, these refreshments may not be enough to last until the final destination on longer journeys. For extended routes, such as from Erode to Coimbatore on the Shatabdi Express, passengers are also served soup and lunch, making the journey more relaxing and satisfying.
In the cozy air-conditioned coaches, bedding is typically provided for each berth: a soft pillow, a warm blanket, and a clean bedsheet. This makes overnight train travel in India especially comfortable. However, due to pandemic-related restrictions, this bedding service was paused for some time. In regular sleeper coaches, passengers usually bring their own pillows and sheets, adding a personal touch and homely comfort to the journey.
TTE Ticket Check: A Key Part of Railway Travel
Once the train begins its journey, the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) starts checking tickets coach by coach. A typical long-distance Indian train includes several reserved coaches, an engine, a guard’s coach, and at least one unreserved coach for passengers without prior reservations. Reserved seats are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis when tickets are booked.
Because of the large number of passengers using Indian Railways every day, confirmed seats can be limited, and some travellers may not get the seats they prefer. It is also important to remember that travelling in a reserved coach without a valid ticket is strictly prohibited. The TTE has the authority to impose a fine or ask such passengers to move to the appropriate coach, ensuring fair use of reserved compartments.
The Train Ride
As the train makes its longer halts, we begin to feel more connected to nature, taking in the lush green fields, open farmlands, and glimpses of rural life that lie far from the chaos of city traffic. After a hearty breakfast, a few fellow passengers drift into a relaxed sleep, rocked gently by the motion of the train. Once we pass Salem in Tamil Nadu, India, we usually call or message my parents to let them know our journey is going smoothly. The ride from Salem to Erode takes around an hour, and we also give them an update when we cross Sankari Durg, another familiar landmark on this route.

The moment we spot the board announcing Erode Junction, a wave of emotion washes over us. The excitement of returning home makes us eager to get off the train. That six-hour journey suddenly feels worthwhile for a glimpse of a familiar station name. This joy is relatable—returning to our parents’ home brings special happiness. I long to visit Erode again as soon as life allows.
As we step off the train, the eagerness to reach home only grows stronger. We hurry out of the station, quickly find our vehicle, and make our way through the familiar streets. The moment we arrive at the doorstep, the weariness of the journey begins to fade. A refreshing wash, followed by a wholesome home-cooked meal, brings comfort and peace. It is in these simple rituals that we finally relax and let go of the fatigue of a six-hour train ride.
Conclusion
Wherever we may live and whichever mode of transport we choose, every trip back to our parents’ home is a unique experience. Through this post, I hope I’ve given you a virtual train ride across a small slice of India, especially the Chennai to Erode route by Indian Railways. Let us continue to travel, explore new destinations, and celebrate the connections that keep us grounded. May every journey we take foster more harmony, peace, and togetherness in our lives.
