Chill And Thrill – A Lazy Rainy Saturday Unwind

Picture a rainy Saturday in Toronto, with drops tapping against the window. It was a perfect day to relax and recharge. Join me on “Chill and Thrill: A Lazy Rainy Saturday Unwind”—our magical weekend filled with malls, trains, and shared moments.

All week felt inconsistent, but by the weekend in Toronto, we were eager for a simple getaway. After our morning routines and warm video calls, we decided that despite the rain, an indoor adventure to the mall would be the perfect way to enjoy the city.

A Lazy Rainy Saturday Unwind: Chill & Thrill in Toronto

After a long, hot shower—the kind that makes you forget the chill outside—we decided to turn our rainy day in Toronto into a mini city adventure. We headed to Scarborough Town Center first, following that familiar pull of weekend comfort: food. The rain-soaked streets faded into the background as we stepped into the warm buzz of the mall.

The food court smelled like a blend of every craving you could possibly have, and we finally settled on a simple, satisfying lunch that felt like the perfect start to our day. After eating, we wandered into Dollarama, picking up a few little essentials (and a couple of not-so-essential treats, as always). With our bags lightly swinging at our sides, we made our way to GO Transit.

Waiting for the train, watching the rain bead on the platform lights, felt oddly peaceful. When the train finally arrived, we climbed up to the upper deck, snuggled into our seats, and watched Toronto’s grey, rainy skyline drift by, already excited about our next stop on this weekend journey: Yorkdale Mall.

arriving at yorkdale mall on a weekend : a lazy rainy saturday unwind

Arriving at Yorkdale Mall on a rainy weekend in Toronto felt like entering a different world. Outside, the dark sky contrasted with the mall’s bright, stylish decor and polished walkways filled with high-end shops. People—families, couples, and friends—were moving throughout the mall, just like us, to escape the rain.

We walked slowly, soaking in the beauty of Yorkdale Mall: the soaring ceilings, sparkling decor, and the magnificent Christmas tree adorned by DIOR. Standing there, looking up, it felt like the holiday season in Toronto had begun. After hours of wandering and window shopping, it was time to leave Yorkdale and continue our rainy day story at Nathan Phillips Square.

To reach our next adventure, we boarded the TTC subway from Yorkdale, our first TTC ride—another milestone in our Toronto weekend. A brief delay due to an emergency alarm didn’t dampen our mood as we sat side by side, listening to the murmur of travelers and feeling grateful for this shared moment.

We got off at Union Station, with its familiar rush and made our way to Tim Hortons for a quick stop. With a hot coffee and a muffin, we stepped back into the damp evening. The air was cool and the sidewalks slick from the rain as we walked toward Nathan Phillips Square, eager to catch our first glimpse of the holiday lights.

At Nathan Phillips Square: Rainy Night Lights & Cozy Weekend Vibes

Nathan Phillips Square greeted us like a scene from a rainy Toronto postcard—glistening pavement, umbrellas bobbing, and lights shimmering against the dark sky. Even though the celebrations weren’t as grand as in some previous years, there was still something soft and magical in the air.

Holiday lights draped around the square cast a warm glow on those admiring them. The ice rink buzzed with skaters gliding and laughing, while others waited for rentals or posed for photos. We stood for a moment under the sparkling lights, soaking in the atmosphere.

We took photos with the splendid Christmas tree and the charming decorations at Nathan Phillips Square, wanting to freeze not just the scene, but the feeling—the quiet joy of being together on a rainy night in Toronto, surrounded by holiday lights and strangers who all seemed just a little bit happier than usual.

as the evening deepened and the drizzle lingered in the air : chill and thrill

As the evening deepened and the drizzle lingered in the air, we slowly made our way back to Union Station, holding onto the last bits of that cozy holiday glow. Before heading home, we stopped at Paramount Fine Foods https://paramountfinefoods.com/menu-locations/union-station/ and picked up dinner to-go.

Carrying warm takeout boxes through the station was comforting, knowing a quiet evening at home was just a short ride away. We boarded the GO Train to Agincourt, sank into our seats, and let the train’s gentle motion ease our tiredness. By the time we reached home, we were pleasantly exhausted, freshened up, spread out our meal, and savored every bite, ending our rainy weekend in Toronto on a peaceful note.

The holiday season was just around the corner, and with it, the realization that 2023 was slipping quickly into memory. As we looked back on our rainy day in Toronto—wandering Yorkdale Mall, riding the TTC for the first time, soaking in the lights at Nathan Phillips Square—it struck us how much joy can be found in the simplest moments.

The weather could have kept us indoors, but we chose to embrace it, turning grey skies into glistening streets. This weekend reminded us that every rainy Saturday brings warmth and new memories. As we move into the next season, I hope we keep chasing balance—between exploration and rest, between city lights and home comforts—discovering new corners of Toronto, one rainy day at a time.
