The Grace Of Maa Shailaputri : Day 1 Of Navaratri

Maa Shailaputri is the first form of Goddess Durga worshipped during Navaratri. She is also known as Sati Bhavani, Parvati, or Himavati. Her name, “Shailaputri” means the daughter of the mountains, as she was born to King Himavat.

Initially, Maa Shailaputri was Sati, the daughter of King Daksha. Sati married Lord Shiva, But king Daksha did not approve of this union. Consequently, when Daksha organized a grand yagna which is also known as sacrifice, he did not invite Lord Shiva, and Sati. Feeling deeply insulted by her father’s disdain for her husband, Sati self-immolated in the sacrificial fire.

After her sacrifice, Sati was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavat and Queen Menavati. As Parvati, she performed severe penance, and devotion to win Lord Shiva’s love and marry him once again. Thus, she is revered as Shailaputri, embodying strength, purity, and devotion.

Maa Shailaputri, is depicted holding a trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand while riding a bull named Nandi. She represents the essence of nature and is considered the provider of strength and courage to her devotees.

Conclusion

Maa Shailaputri, the first form of Goddess Durga, represents strength, devotion, and purity. Her journey from Sati’s sacrifice to rebirth as Parvati showcases her dedication to Lord Shiva and resilience.
