In today’s busy world, small acts of kindness can make a big difference. That’s why I care about https://www.akshayapatra.org/, an organization that feeds hungry children. In this blog, I’ll share a personal story that changed my perspective. Welcome to “Spreading Sunshine: Unexpected Kindness”, a tale of compassion and hope.
Acts of kindness, like donating, volunteering, or being thoughtful, are essential for building a more caring world. Choosing to be empathetic instead of indifferent helps others and creates a ripple effect of goodwill. I’ve witnessed how one kind action can lift spirits and motivate others to spread kindness.

Unexpected Kindness : Spreading Sunshine
Our story of unexpected kindness starts with the Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO in Bangalore, India, which aims to end hunger in classrooms through its Mid Day Meal Programme. This initiative gives nutritious meals to school children, helping them to learn better. As a global citizen, I appreciate how this programme supports both health and dreams. When families like mine contribute to this cause, we join a larger wave of kindness that helps thousands of children across India.

During the pandemic, life changed a lot for us. Our maid in India couldn’t come to work regularly due to the lockdowns. We had to handle all the household chores, but it made me sad knowing she needed her income to support her family. To help her, my family and I chose to keep paying her and provide extra financial support when we could.
when we told her this, she broke down in tears : unexpected kindness
When we told her this, she broke down in tears, and in that emotional moment, I understood the power of compassion. Even after we moved to Canada, we made it clear that distance wouldn’t change our commitment to her well-being. Supporting her from afar has reminded me that kindness is not limited by geography—it travels with us, wherever we go.
This experience has become a defining chapter in my personal journey with kindness. Every time I think back to that moment, I am reminded that we do not have to be extraordinary to make an extraordinary difference in someone’s life. Moving to Canada brought many changes—new routines, new culture, new beginnings—but the value of giving has remained a constant in our family.
We continue to look for opportunities to help, whether by supporting NGOs like Akshaya Patra, checking in on people back home, or simply showing up for neighbours and friends here. These memories fuel my belief that intentional, everyday kindness can bridge distances, heal hearts, and bring more light into the world.
Random Acts : spreading sunshine
In a lot of Indian cities, especially where big corporate offices pop up, there’s this awesome trend of giving back to the community. A cool example is how more and more people are getting into the Mid Day Meal Programme during Akshaya Tritiya. This festival is pretty special for Hindus and Jains, usually tied to buying gold and inviting prosperity, and folks are really stepping up to help out!
Over the years, I have seen this day evolve for many families, including mine. Instead of just focusing on material purchases, more people invest in kindness—donating meals, supporting NGOs like the Akshaya Patra Foundation, and sharing blessings with children in need. This shift from consumption to contribution reflects a cultural awakening, where generosity and social responsibility are central to our celebrations.
Practising random acts of kindness in today’s world is a powerful way to create positive change. A warm message, a thoughtful donation, or even a kind word can transform someone’s day and their outlook on life. Small acts of compassion leave a lasting imprint on both the receiver and the giver. By weaving kindness into our routines, we design a tapestry of goodwill that makes the world gentler and more humane.
Through real stories of kindness—from supporting our maid during the pandemic to contributing to causes like the Mid Day Meal Programme—I hope to inspire you to reflect on your ability to spread sunshine. You don’t need a special occasion; just the intention to care. By choosing empathy, we can shape a world where compassion and generosity thrive. One act, one person, one moment at a time, we can make this world kinder.
