Jet Lagged But Joyful: Our Entry Into Canadian Territory

Some journeys https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey aren’t just about ticking off destinations on a map, but about the emotions, fears, and tiny moments of joy that slowly carry you there. Through this blog, I want to let you into our hearts as I share our entry into Canada, our Chennai to Toronto flight, and the very first steps of our new life on this beautiful land. So, welcome to “Jet Lagged But Joyful : Our Entry Into Canadian Territory” — a story of goodbyes, new beginnings, and everything in between.

“They say getting ready is the secret sauce for an epic adventure,” and oh, did we truly live that line. Before our journey, our home overflowed with open suitcases, shopping bags, and late-night conversations filled with excitement and anxiety. As the world began to heal, our long-awaited visas arrived, making our Canadian dream feel surreal. October 2022 became etched in our memories as the month our dreams took flight amidst a whirlwind of planning and emotions.

Our Entry Into Canadian Territory : Chennai to Toronto Flight Journey

The D-day finally arrived, bringing with it a storm of questions swirling in our minds: “What to take? How much to take?” and “What to buy here and there?” Every item we packed felt heavy, not just with weight, but with memories — gifts from loved ones, familiar spices, tiny comforts from home. Once we slowly made peace with what to carry and what to painfully leave behind, the next concern stared us in the face: managing the baggage allowance. It’s such a common travel woe, but when you’re moving from India to Canada, every extra kilo feels like a piece of your old life you’re trying to hold on to, all while risking excess baggage fees.

Our First Leg : From Chennai To Delhi : With a deep breath and one last look around Chennai Airport, we finally resolved our baggage drama and checked in, hearts thudding with a mix of relief and nervousness. The first stretch of our Chennai to Toronto flight began quietly, with us boarding the Air India flight that would take us to Delhi. The seat felt surprisingly comfortable, the warm dinner reminded us of home, and in that moment, we let ourselves relax just a little.

This first Air India experience gave us hope that maybe, just maybe, the journey ahead would be kinder than we feared. After a smooth two-and-a-half-hour flight, our plane touched down stylishly in Delhi. We completed immigration at Delhi airport and stepped into a nearly deserted terminal, where the quiet, late-night ambience wrapped around us. The dim lights, the distant announcements, and the soft echo of our footsteps turned that walk to the gate into a moment of deep reflection — we were really doing this.

Transit & Long Haul : Our Entry Into Canadian Territory

Transit At Delhi Airport : We landed at Delhi Airport around 11:15 PM on October 13, 2022, after taking off from Chennai at 8:00 PM, and suddenly the reality of our journey settled in. We had hours to go before our next flight at 3 AM, and the long wait became a strange pause between two lives — the one we were leaving behind and the one we were moving toward.

We breezed through the inspection check, but inside, our minds were busy replaying memories of home, family faces, and last-minute hugs. As we waited to board the second leg of our journey, exhaustion and anticipation mingled in the cool, air-conditioned stillness of the terminal.

Despite a few minor issues with the entertainment system, we boarded our second leg, a fully packed Boeing 777, for our 14-hour Delhi to Toronto long haul flight. This was the true test of our Chennai to Toronto route — the part where time seemed to both crawl and rush past. We settled into our seats with blankets, pillows, and snacks, trying to create a tiny cocoon of comfort in the middle of the sky. The cabin lights dimmed, engines roared, and as we rose into the twilight, a cocktail of emotions washed over us: restlessness, excitement, nervousness, and a quiet, stubborn hope for the life awaiting us on the other side of the ocean.

Second Leg : From Delhi To Toronto : Jetlagged But Joyful

Second Leg : From Delhi To Toronto : India To Canada: As the hours slowly passed on our Delhi to Toronto long haul flight, small details began to matter more — the reassuring smiles of the crew, the warmth of the meal service, the soft rustle of passengers settling in. At one point, the rising sun spilled through the tiny windows, painting the clouds in shades of pink and gold.

That sunrise felt symbolic, like the universe whispering that new beginnings often follow the darkest stretches. Our journey’s fatigue gradually started to soften as we inched closer to our new home. Though we had already been traveling for more than 10 hours on this Chennai to Toronto flight, the anticipation of finally landing at Toronto Pearson Airport kept us wide awake and alert. Every passing hour felt like one step closer to rewriting our story.

Landing At Pearson International : “The longest journeys start with a single step”. Our journey culminated in a graceful, smooth landing at Pearson International Airport, and in that brief moment when the wheels touched the ground, our hearts whispered, “We made it.” Clearing customs and immigration went easier than we had feared, and an immense wave of relief washed over us. We were deeply grateful to my husband’s cousin’s family, who welcomed us into their home and hearts for the first two days in Canada.

Despite being completely jet lagged from the time difference and the intense travel, we still managed to laugh, share stories, and feel a sense of belonging in a new country. Those first days were a blur of post-arrival tasks, essential shopping, and searching for accommodation — tiring, emotional, but incredibly rewarding. Every small step made this dream of moving from India to Canada feel more real.

Conclusion : Moving from India to Canada, Jet Lagged But Joyful

Looking back now, our experience of traveling from Chennai to Canada feels like a beautiful, exhausting, emotional tapestry. It was tiring in every possible way — physically, mentally, and emotionally — yet it was also rich with memories of resilience, perseverance, and quiet courage. This journey — our own moving from India to Canada story — has become the strong foundation of our new life here. It taught us how much we could endure, how deeply we could feel, and how bravely we could start over. With hearts full of gratitude, we now look ahead with hopes to travel more, create endless memories, and build harmonious lives filled with tranquility, warmth, and peace.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a journey, not a destination”. This journey marked the true beginning of our Canadian adventure — a vivid tapestry of new beginnings, fragile dreams slowly taking shape, and endless possibilities waiting just beyond the horizon. And though we arrived jet lagged, we were undeniably joyful, ready to write the next chapters of our story in this new land we now call home.

Great post! It’s interesting to read about your preparation and experience on this long-haul flight. I can relate to the struggle of trying to fit everything into the baggage allowance. My question is, how did you cope with the jetlag and adjusting to the time difference once you arrived in Canada? Did you have any tips or tricks that helped you adapt more easily?

HI..Thank you for your wonderful comments. We did have jet lag once we arrived in Canada… We did not sleep in all the time. Morning we woke up way too early. We found it difficult yes. ! This is our first time where we had to adjust to an entirely different time zone. We did sleep in the afternoons for some time for the first two days and in the nights we slept way too early. But our relatives were kind enough to help us get through the jet lag. You tube and tips from the relatives helped us to get adapted easily. Trying to fit everything into the baggage was difficult, yes ! But our parents helped us. we found it easy..! Looking forward for your support to my blogs. Trying my level best to entertain all.
